What is Person-Centred Counselling?

It is a type of counselling that puts you the client at the centre of the therapy. Dr Carl Rogers is the founder of person-centred approach It believes that all of us have an innate desire to grow, and change given the right environment and that the relationship between the therapist and the client is a vital part of this. It allows you, to bring yourself and what you want to the sessions. When exploring yourself and challenges you are facing in a non-judgmental and empathetic setting, it is believed that the process helps facilitate self-discovery and finding solutions to life's challenges.

 Limitations of Person-centred Counselling:

  • It does not provide specific tools, it is not for diagnosing and not for giving treatment plans.

Person-centred counselling can be effective especially for young and adults' people experiencing:

  •   Low self-esteem and confidence issues – Person-centred counselling helps them to understand their strengths and build self-acceptance.

  • Grief and loss – Counselling provides comfort and a way to process emotions.

  • Depression and low mood – person-centred counselling offers a safe space to express feelings and find ways to move forward.

  • Self-harm and difficult emotions – Young people sometimes struggle to express pain in healthy ways. Counselling provides understanding and support without judgement.

  •  Process difficult emotions – Feelings of fear, shame, anger, or confusion are natural responses to abuse. Express those feeling for example anger or shame can help reduce distress.
